John Milton Lowery II passed away on August 18, 2026, at the home of his eldest daughter, surrounded by his daughters and his four grandchildren, the people he loved most in this world.
John was a devoted son, father, grandfather, mechanic, outdoorsman, music lover, and a man who was completely and unapologetically himself.
He was smart, funny, incredibly particular, and gifted with his hands. A mechanic for much of his life, John had a natural ability to understand how things worked and how to fix them. He also loved hunting and fishing, and some of his most meaningful relationships and memories were built around time spent doing those things with the people he loved.
Music was another constant in John’s life, and it became one of the greatest bonds he shared with his daughters. Their favorite memories include long drives with his box of cassette tapes sitting in their laps, singing along to the songs he loved while he kept the beat against the dashboard. He would bang along so hard that the change and peppermints scattered across the dash would rattle with him, becoming their own percussion section.
Those car rides were about much more than music. Somewhere between the songs, the laughter, and the miles, John taught his girls about life. Decades later, a familiar song can still bring them right back to those moments with their dad.
Many years ago, John suffered a stroke that dramatically changed his life. While it brought challenges, his family also came to see it as an unexpected gift. It gave John a second chapter, one that allowed him to slow down, spend more time with his family, and be truly present for many moments they might not otherwise have shared.
His family is profoundly grateful for those extra years.
John loved his daughters, Lauri and Melinda Ann, fiercely, and becoming a grandfather gave him four more people, who he loved more than anything, in Madison, Justin, John, and Wylder. He cherished the time he had watching his granddaughter and three grandsons grow, and each of them will carry their own special memories of their grandfather forward. He also formed a beautiful bond with his great-niece and great-nephew, Cypress Smith and River Smith, whose daily visits brought so much joy to his life. He loved them as his own grandchildren and treasured the time they spent together.
John also carried a deep and enduring love for his Mama and Daddy throughout his life. Knowing that he is with them again now brings his family tremendous comfort and peace.
Those closest to John knew there were certain things he simply would not negotiate, and shoes and socks were near the top of that list. He hated wearing them and made it clear that when his time came, he wanted his feet free.
So they are and will be forever.
In his final days, his family made every effort to honor the wishes of a man who had always known exactly what he wanted. He was able to remain comfortable, surrounded by his family, and cared for with dignity and love.
John was especially fortunate to have his eldest daughter, Lauri, beside him throughout his illness. Lauri moved her family closer so she could be there for her dad and became his companion, caregiver, advocate, and steady presence through the final chapter of his life. The time they shared was a gift to them both.
John is survived by his daughters, Lauri Elizabeth Wallace and husband, Bobby Wallace, Melinda Ann Lowery and partner, Colt Wimbish; his four grandchildren, Madison Jacobs and partner, Mason Corbitt, Justin Jacobs, John Jacobs, Wylder Lowery; brothers, Al Lowery, James Lowery and wife Cindy; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved Daddy, John Milton Lowery, Mama, Joan Elizabeth Lowery; and his infant sister.
There are countless ways his family will remember him: the sound of a favorite song turned up too loud, a fishing pole in hand, something broken spread out in front of him waiting to be fixed, his quick humor, his stubborn streak, and, of course, his bare feet.
Most of all, they will remember how deeply he loved them.
John left this life surrounded by his girls and his grandchildren, in a place where he was comfortable, with his wishes honored and his family close. After being given so many extra years together, there could be no more fitting way to say goodbye.
