He graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1960. He taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade in Fairfield, TX. After an illness and hospitalization, he was thinking about the verse John 21:17, where Jesus said to Peter, “Feed my sheep.”  It was at that time that he felt called into ministry. He started leading music at FBC Fairfield, TX. He and Joan were called to East Sherman Baptist Church in Sherman, TX in music and education. He served in Sherman for 8 years then was called to Springhill FBC in Longview, TX. He then served at Linden FBC for 33 years and finally to Antioch Baptist Church in Atlanta, TX.  He enjoyed teaching and serving others and especially taking the senior adults to Texarkana to eat and shop at the mall. He ministered to those who were recovering in the hospital. He went on two missionary trips to Cozumel, Mexico where he assisted in building a church and led others to Christ.  He showed his love to his family by cooking and making them laugh, by telling his famous jokes.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Michelle Phelps, his parents, and brother, Charles Phelps.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan Phelps. His daughters, Tammy Wells and Patti Foreman and sons-in-law, Gary Wells and Joe Foreman.
