Funeral services for Marie Tarver Durden, 80, of Houston, formerly of Jefferson will be at 10 AM on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Enon Baptist Church in Jefferson with Rev. Ray Charles Boston officiating. Interment will be in Kellyville Cemetery in Jefferson under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home, Inc. Viewing will be on Friday, March 19th afternoon and evening at the funeral home in Hughes Springs. Mrs. Durden was born in Sweet Union, Texas on January 2, 1930 and died on Friday, March 12, 2010 at a Houston nursing home. She was the eldest daughter of the late JC and Aline Tarver. She loved the Lord. A typical day was started by reading her bible and praying. She demonstrated her faith in Christ by serving others in the community. She possessed the gift of hospitality. Often times, members of the community would come to her home to enjoy a fresh cooked meal and fellowship. Strangers were always welcome into her home. She loved gardening and reading and watching Jefferson Bulldogs and the Cowboys. In 1948, Marie married the late Hardy V. Hughes and to this union twelve children were born. Nine sons Jay Hughes (Trina) of Suisun City, CA, Warren Hughes (Deidre), Kenneth Hughes, Tony Hughes, Aundra Hughes of Houston, TX, James Terry Hughes of Houston, TX and John Rickey Hughes (Pamela) of McKinney, TX.; four daughters Peggy House (Quille) of Sherman TX, Alice Mergerson (James) of McKinney TX, Elesa Russaw of Jefferson, TX, and Shirley Brown of Houston TX. In 1974, Marie married John H. Durden and to this union two children were born Johnny Lewis Hughes Durden and Broderick Durden. Those who preceded Marie in death were her husband, John H. Durden; two brothers Kenneth, DCarver and Marvin Tarver, one daughter: Sharon K. Hughes and two grandchildren James Terry Hughes, JR. and Vickie Whitlock. (Marie was loved by all her family, but Shirley was faithfully with her until her death for which we are all truly grateful.) She was a member of Sweet Union Baptist Church and Enon Baptist Church. Survivors include her brothers Jay Lee Tarver of Lufkin, TX;, Mickey Tarver (Annette) of Houston, TX; Sisters and sisters-in-law: Evelyn Odhams (Ocie) of Barstow CA, Jeanell Cotton (Charlie) of Crockett, TX., Gwendolyn Muldrew (Charles -deceased) of Houston , TX., Joyce Davis (William) of Houston, TX, Margie Tarver of Wells, TX; Twenty-two grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; One Aunt: Ida Tarver of Houston, TX., numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

We're grateful for the opportunities we've had to pray for and with this family on Ms Durden's behalf. We thank God that she is home and we pray for the family's continued strength as you mourn…not as if there is no hope..but simply because she will be missed. We love you for real!
