LindenServices for Mary Elizabeth "Dood" O'Rear, 88, of Linden will be at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, March 27, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Linden with Bro. Charles Russell, Don Phelps, Trey O'Rear and Bro. Jackie Stanfield officiating. Burial will be in the Linden Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday night from 6 to 8 PM at the Funeral Home. Arrangements are by Reeder-Davis-Schindler Funeral Home. Mrs. O'Rear was born November 30, 1919 in Linden, Texas to Dr. Thomas Duke and Mary Eva Barnett Ford. She died Monday, March 24, 2008. She graduated from Linden High School, where she was a cheerleader, a basketball star, a thespian and voted most popular girl. She married her high school sweetheart, Milton Thomas O'Rear on October 14, 1937. She received a B.S. degree and a M.Ed. Degree from East Texas State University. She returned to Cass County and began her teaching career. Mrs. O'Rear was a member of First Baptist Church of Linden where she served as Nursery Department Secretary and was active in WMU. She was a member of the Linden Chamber of Commerce and had been recognized for her outstanding volunteer contributions. She received a National Community Service Award from the American Association of Retired Persons. Mrs. O'Rear was a charter member and past president of the Linden Retired Teachers Association. She served for many years as secretary at the Linden Cemetery Association, was a member of and past president of the Helping Hands at Oak Manor Nursing Home, and was a member of Chapter 576, Order of Eastern Star holding various leadership positions. For many years, she was an active member and on the Board of Directors of the L-K Ex-Students Association. She was also a Girl Scout Leader and active in the Conifer Girl Scout Council, Community Council of Cass County, and the Crisis Center of Cass County. She is survived by a son, Tom O'Rear of Linden, a daughter and son-in-law, Jeanie and Gary Stevens of Linden, a sister, Jennie Lou Henderson of Tyler, a sister-in-law, Sybil O'Rear of Refugio; seven grandchildren: Trey O'Rear and wife, Josephine, Cass O'Rear, Drew O'Rear, Andy Helkey and wife Lyndsay, Jennifer Elizabeth Stewart and husband, Patrick, Natalie Allen and husband, Jeremy, and Summer Cooner and husband, Justin; six great-grandchildren: Madison Elizabeth and Gatlin Stewart, Jainah Helkey, Peyton Long and Burkelyn Allen and Aiden Cooner and many special nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Linden, Linden Cemetery Association, L-K Ex-Students Scholarship Fund or the organization of your choice.
