Mary Elizabeth (Pilgrim) Wallace, age 91, of Hughes Springs, Texas, was born August 27, 1933, to Marion and Ethel Pilgrim in Morris County. Mary passed away on February 5, 2025, in Jefferson, Texas.  She attended school in Daingerfield, Texas, and married Charles Elmore Wallace of Hughes Springs on September 1, 1950.  They were married for 65 years prior to Charles’s death on June 5, 2015.  Like her husband, Mary spent her life serving her family, her church (Hughes Springs Methodist Church), and her community.  Though her priorities were the aforementioned, she also worked at McKellars Department Store, was an Activity Director at a local nursing home, and particularly enjoyed working several years as a Librarian Aide at Hughes Springs Elementary School.

Mary was a gifted and creative baker. (If you know…YOU know!)  She locally (and elsewhere) became “famous” for her decadent pound cakes!  Once you had enjoyed a piece of her white-chocolate or lemon pound cake, you were “hooked” for life and clamored for more! In time, after much demand, she was persuaded to take orders from individuals and businesses who became regular customers until her “retirement” at 89.

Mary Wallace is survived by her three children and their spouses: Chuck and Toni Wallace (Lone Star, Texas), Mary Ellen and Kent Thigpen DDS (Jefferson, Texas), and Karen Epps (Texarkana, Texas).  Mrs. Wallace is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Drs. Chelsi Thigpen Jackson (Brent), Allen Thigpen (Megan); Heather Wallace Morris (Seth), Heath Wallace (Candace), Shane Head (Lisa), Jason Head (Jennifer), Brett Head (Beverly), Adam Head (Lindsey).  Other survivors include 14 great-grandchildren: Cheyne Brown (Jenna), Cason Head, Dr. Blake Head (Ziba), Ryan Head (Aubrey), Brandon Head, Alison Head, Reagan Head (Omar), Kelsey Head, Cash Thigpen, Tate Thigpen, Harper Foshee, Beckett Morris, Brody Wallace, Hudson Wallace.  Mary is also survived by one great-great grandson, Maverick Head.  Mary is also survived by her two sisters, Virginia Miller of Daingerfield, and Marie Hayes from Sulphur Springs.  Mrs. Wallace was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Charles Wallace; her parents, Marion and Ethel Pilgrim; siblings: Marvin Pilgrim, Faye Foster, Marion Brown, and Ruby Hall, all from the Morris/Cass County areas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hughes Springs Methodist Church or the Hughes Springs Cemetery Association.
