Funeral services for Mrs. Ouida Murell Hatten, age 87, of Hughes Springs, Texas, will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 23, 2024, at Hughes Springs Community Church, with Pastor Jessie Biles officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park, under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs. Mrs. Hatten will lie in state from 12:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 22, 2024, and there will be a time of visitation with the family from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Hughes Springs.
Ouida Murell Carter-Hatten was born August 21,1937 to the late Charlie and Emma Lou Hillis Carter in Hughes Springs, Texas. Ouida attended Mount Olive Schools. She accepted Christ at an early age and attended the Bethlehem United Methodist Church and later, Hughes Springs Community Church.
On July 15, 1954, she married James Hatten and to this union 6 children were born. Ouida worked as an insurance agent for over 30 years and was also a foster parent to many children for over 10 years. Ouida was a loving wife and mother. She was affectionately known as “Big Mama” to so many! She never met a stranger and was always kind to all she met. “To know her was to love her.” She loved playing the piano, singing and praising God. She was a member of the Heroines of Jericho. She departed peacefully in her home on November 15, 2024, and will truly be missed.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Charlie & Emma Lou Carter, husband, James Hatten, daughter, Jamie Todd, granddaughter, Chrystalyn Baker, siblings, L.C. Carter, Pasco Carter, Winfred Carter and Glenn Carter.
She leaves to cherish her memories: daughter, Burnett Hollis of Houston, TX, son, Ronald (Debra) Hatten of Hughes Springs, TX, daughter Patsy (Michael) Taylor of Atlanta, TX, son, Roderick Hatten of Hughes Springs, TX, daughter, Phyllis (Rickey) Harrison of Hughes Springs, TX, son, Anson (Tammie) Johnson of Greenville, TX, daughter, Aerial (Neil) Williams of Houston, TX, son, Rodrick Brown-Hatten and daughter, Shatrice Brown-Hatten of Texarkana, TX; sisters: Lillian Grimes of Dallas, TX and Vivian Betts of Hughes Springs, TX, brother-in-law, Debron Hatten Jr. of Hughes Springs, TX, 31 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and very special friends; Patricia Murphy, Gean Ellison, Gussie Stokes, Mary Love and Wanda Gaston.

Ms. Ouida was such a dear dear friend.
I was blessed to be welcomed into her lovely home so many times. She hosted my wedding shower 35 years ago.
