Michael Stephen “Steve” Butler passed away on March 6, 2025, after complications following a fall. Born on February 5, 1947, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to H.E. and Clara Butler, Steve grew up with a strong will, a generous heart, and a personality all his own.

Steve graduated from Karnack High School and spent many years working as a logger for International Paper Company. He was a simple man, set in his ways, and proud of it. He lived in a log house and found joy in life’s simple pleasures such as hunting, fishing, and tending to his large vegetable garden. In his younger days, Steve competed in shooting competitions, and throughout his life, he was always willing to lend a hand to a neighbor in need.

If you ever played a game with Steve, whether it was croquet, 42, or anything in between, you played by “Butler rules.” And those rules weren’t up for debate.

In 1966, Steve married Janie Johnson McCay, and together they were blessed with two daughters, Paula and Phyllis. Later in life, Steve married Stella Grider Butler, and gained three bonus sons, Nick, Daniel, and David, to their blended family. Steve loved them all fiercely, in his own unique way.

Steve was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Butler; his parents; and his sisters, Mary Carter and Shirley Spencer.

He is survived by his daughters, Paula Haggard and husband Lee of Jefferson, and Phyllis Butler and Brandon Smith of Avinger; his bonus sons, Nicholas Fredericksen and wife Pamela of Avinger, David Fredericksen and wife Tracy of Houston, and Daniel Favio and wife Rachel of Florida; his beloved grandchildren, Natalie, Jordan, Jessica, and LeeAnn; and his precious great-grandchildren, Addyson, Ava, Carter, Camden, Wyatt, and Charlee. He also leaves behind his sister, Ghena Starrett and husband Phil of Avinger; his brother, Bo Butler of Woodlawn; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Liz Baker, Linda Davenport, and Annette Gonzalez for the love and care they provided Steve over the last few years.

Steve will be remembered for his strength, his humor, his unwavering ways, and the love he had for his family and friends.
