Tom Franklin Hamilton, 80,of Linden, Texas died Saturday, January 1, 2011, in a local nursing home after failing health from a stroke in 2004. He was born in the New Colony Community in Cass County on January 13, 1930, son of Otha and Ora Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton was a graduate from Linden High School in 1947, and East Texas Baptist College, Marshall, Texas, in June, 1951, when he enlisted in the United States Air Force. After basic training, he enrolled in Officers Candidate School, and served 20 years retiring as a Master Navigator. During the Vietnam War, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. In July, 1971, he returned to Linden and earned a Masters Degree in Education from East Texas State University, Commerce, Texas, and taught mathematics and computers at Linden-Kildare High School for nineteen years. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Linden, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher for 33 years, and church clerk for 19 years. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Phyllis Hamilton, and his daughter and son-in-law Deborah and Randy Taylor; son Timothy Hamilton; granddaughter, Rachel Loftis and grandson Keith Taylor. His sister Maurene Hays of Linden, and sister-in-law Thelma West of Brownville, Maine, also survive him. His son, Stephen Paul Hamilton, preceded him in death. Visitation will be Monday, January 3, 5-8 p.m. at Reeder-Davis Schindler Funeral Home, in Linden. Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 4, at 2 p.m. First Baptist Church in Linden with the Rev. Charles Russell and Rev. Jackie Stanfield, officiating. Burial will be in New Colony Cemetery under the direction of Reeder-Davis-Schindler Funeral Home. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Linden, or New Colony Baptist Church, Linden.
