John Chalmage Allison, age 86 passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 16, 2010. John was born in Many, Louisiana to John Wesley Allison and Ollie Jewel Starrett Allison on March 19, 1923. One of five children John lived most of his life in Texas. After graduating as valedictorian of Avinger High School, John married his high school sweetheart, Ivy Rea Aycock in 1943, just before he left for active duty in the U.S. Army Air Corps. During World War II John served stateside, including Keesler Field in Biloxi, Mississippi, where he worked on B-17s, the flying fortresses of World War II. After the war, John completed his engineering degree at the University of Houston. He and Ivy, with their three children, made their home in Houston, Texas where he worked for Texas Automatic Sprinklers. In 1958 John joined Thiokol Chemical Corporation in Marshall, Texas. In 1962, John returned to Texas Automatic Sprinklers as its chief engineer at company headquarters in Dallas and worked there until 1983, when he was retired as president of the company. In Dallas, he and Ivy were members of Highland Park United Methodist Church. John and Ivy retired to Marshall, Texas where John enjoyed golf and gardening and with Ivy, delighted in being beloved grandparents to eight grandchildren. Their home in Marshall was a special retreat for all the family, but particularly for the grandchildren who looked forward to adventures and fun with Granddad and Ivy. In 2002 John and Ivy moved to Fort Worth where the family continued to gather around them. John lost Ivy in 2006, but he found strength in his family. In 2007 he hosted a family reunion in Del Mar, California that included two great grandchildren. And in May 2009 he held his third great grandchild John Marshall Sparks. Just last summer John danced with all seven of his granddaughters at the marriage of his granddaughter, Allison Grant Howard. He was adored. On January 16, 2010, surrounded by his family, John went to be with the Lord. John was preceded in death by his mother and father, sister Lena Allison Taylor and brothers, Horace Vaughn Allison, and George Elmer Allison. He is survived by his brother Bobby Joe Allison; daughters Pamela Barger and Deborah Grant, and son John Thomas Allison; sons-in-law Ray Barger and David Grant; daughter-in-law Anna McCall Allison; his grandchildren: Stephanie LaFlamme and Greg Barger; Allison Howard, Amanda Powell, and Carolyn Grant; Elizabeth Sparks, Meredith and Kathleen Allison; his great-grandchildren: Alexander and Ivy LaFlamme and John Marshall Sparks. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Accolade Hospice, 308 NW Renfro, Suite 202, Burleson, Tx 76028. Visitation will be from 6:00pm until 8:00pm Friday, January 22nd at Reeder-Davis Funeral Home, Hughes Springs, Texas. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 23rd at 2:00pm at First United Methodist Church, Hughes Springs, Texas, with the Reverend Bill Smith officiating.
